Research Help
This page should help students with the research paper topic. If you have any questions or suggestions, see me.
Prewriting Strategies
- Divide your research paper in a series of tasks. Be sure you understand the assignment; if not ask for help or further explanation.
- Select a broad topic that can be narrowed down into a thesis statement. If your topic is too general, you will be bogged down by the amount of research!
- Pick a topic that suits your general interest or curiosity. Nothing's worse than writing about a topic you dislike.
- Ask a librarian for book suggestions about your topic, or do internet searches to generate ideas.
- Brainstorm key words to develop a topic.

Conducting Research
- Research can come from conducting interviews, examining official documents, autobiographies, or works of art. Don't forget these sources.
- Secondary sources include encylopedias, CD-ROMs, dictionaries, biographies, documentary films, and internet sources.
- Make sure your source's information relate to your narrowed topic. Check the Table of Contents of your source.
- Make sure your source is reliable and current.
